By the time you finish reading this article, you'll have learned that we have an enormous appetite for gasoline. The fact that we guzzle 400 million gallons of gasoline per day is a sure enough indicator of the appetite we have for gasoline.

Gas today, can be likened to the blood that races through our body.

Someone said, “The life is in the blood.” That’s so true when considering the importance we place on gasoline. It’s our lifeline. Have you stopped to even consider what gasoline means to you?

Here's a fact for you, every year we devour 146 Billion gallons of gasoline. That figure, as if not stunning enough, increases by 2.5% each consecutive year.

To further reinforce this fact, a recent MEMA Report informed us that we drive 2.5 Trillion miles every year. Wow! That is a whole lot of driving. Where do we go? Mind you, the U S is a vast country, but 2.5 Trillion?

Here's the truth, we consume approximately 400 million gallons of gas per day. According to the US Dept. of Energy, the US daily oil needs amount to approximately 20 million barrels.

Additionally, the DOE tells us that each barrel contains 42 gallons of oil. Of those 42 gallons, roughly 19-20 gallons are siphoned off to manufacture gasoline for us to drive the highways and the byways of this fair land.

Immediately the question springs to mind. Where do we find those 20 million barrels every day? Wouldn't it be awesome if we could get those 20 million barrels from our own shores? Because if we get those 20m from another country, then the question of dependence upon that country suddenly presents itself.

Everyone knows that summer vacations fuel our need for even more gas. That’s when we take the family on the yearly jaunt to relieve built up stress.

Let's consider the fourth of July, Memorial Day, and Labor day. These are typical holidays that tend to increase our thirst for gas.

In fact, on this labor day, the AAA is expecting roughly 35.2 million Americans to hit the road. The AAA further believes that the 35.2m who will be on the road, will travel approximately 50 miles or more.

The vast majority will be sporting their SUV’s. The growth and popularity of Sport-Utility-Vehicles, (SUV), has had a dramatic effect on bumping up those 146 Billion gallons. The next time you visit a large shopping mall, try and count the number of SUV’s in the parking lot.

The 35.2 million drivers on the roads this Labor Day represents a 1.2% increase when put up against the figures from 2005. The figures undoubtedly show us that in the face of high gasoline prices this summer, we have still traveled.

We need to take some action!

The burning question of whether we should curb our appetite for gas must be addressed. Each person who drives must ensure that they do something to cut down on gas consumption. No matter how insignificant.
