With the price of new cars shooting up like sky-rocket each year, buying a used car is a great way to stretch your dollar. But also a gamble, if you’re lucky you might be able to score yourself a great car at a bargain on the other hand you might just get a lemon car. And there’re scam artists out there to take advantage of unexpected buyers. Be prepared to run as far away from the seller when these happen:

Airbag Fraud: Crooked, dishonest body shops would either replace your previously deployed airbags with dummies or non-working airbag. Or in other cases, they remove your un-deployed airbag and replace it with a deployed one to make it seem as though the original had deployed during the accidents. Drivers almost have no way of finding out until it’s too late.

Odometer Rollbacks: The digital odometers are rolled back by equipment that available for easy access on the internet or sometimes the documents can be forged. The lower mileage helps the seller make more money on car’s value but can be increased maintenance and repair costs for the buyer. The average mileage per year is about 12,000 miles so if the number seems excessively low, start asking questions.

VIN Cloning: Scam artists can switch the VIN on stolen cars to conceal their identity and the cars are then sold to unknowing customers.

Curbstoning: Be careful of individuals selling used car from vacant lot or the side of the curb. These vehicles may be sold by unlicensed dealers or conmen posing as private sellers. The car can come with hidden problems.
