From the dawn of the modern era, we have upped the ante on the destruction of Mother Earth. In our betrayal of a sacred trust to Mother Earth, we have unleashed on her an unrelenting barrage of pollution, overheating, greenhouse gas, and global warming.

Bystanders, if there are any, would be amazed to watch us destroy something that gives us so much in return. We are killing the goose who practically hands us the golden egg.

At alarming and increasing rates, we continue to pump greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. We stick our collective heads in the sand, and turn our backs while big business attacks and rapes Mother Earth. The guilt that accompanies the betrayal of a sacred trust is written all over our faces.

No longer can we stand idly by while Mother Earth suffers the brunt of the beating alone.

As a matter of fact, those of us who stand idly by, usually bare the brunt of her fury whenever Mother Earth decides she is going to send us a message.

The tsunami that struck a few years ago after Christmas was an ample reminder. The death and destruction that Mother Earth wrought on those several countries was simply staggering.

Our continual raping and wholesale carnage of her resources, created an imbalance. And when Mother Earth shifts because of the imbalance that we have caused, look what happens. She convulses hundreds of miles out at sea and the ripple is not even noticed.

However, by the time that ripple comes ashore it was a massive giant tsunami that destroyed all and sundry in its wake. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost, and the economic destruction for all intents and purposes, was total.

Recently, Mother Earth sent another warning sign way over in Northeastern Australia. Cyclone Larry was a category 5 mega-monster whose wind bursts gushed at more than 180 m.p.h. Larry cut a frightening swathe through that country.

Last year the country of Indonesia was choking in the vice grip of a serious drought. Then the unthinkable happened. A fire started and it seemed as if the whole country was helplessly ablaze.

The unprecedented, wholesale destruction of New Orleans is still burned into our collective conscious. We are all forever changed by the unbridled fury unleashed by Mother Earth as she exacted a brutal vengeance on the helpless.

When we say that Mother Earth has warmed, here is the result. Since 1970, the waters of our great oceans have heated up by one full degree Fahrenheit. One degree may not seem like much but look at the statistics.

Two significant pieces of data surfaced in two recent studies. The first bit of information is that over the last 35 years, Category 4 and Category 5 hurricanes have doubled. And the windspeed of hurricanes has also doubled. We must keep in mind that warm water is like fuel for typhoons and hurricanes.

Upon reflection, we have been put to the test. Our higher, nobler calling has always been to take care of our brother. The poor, the disadvantaged, the hurting, the less fortunate. After all, Mother Earth can and does take care of herself.

Taking care of Mother Earth is inextricably wound up in taking care of our brother. We are our brother’s keeper. . In closing, we come from Mother Earth. What is significant is that our bodies are made up of her components. At the end of our days, we return from whence we came.

In the betrayal of a sacred trust to Mother Earth, we in fact have betrayed ourselves. We have betrayed our brothers, our children. We have betrayed our legacy.
